The Cabinet has approved a contract for $194.8 million to expand facilities at the Tamarind Farm Adult Correctional Centre.
Minister with responsibility for information, Senator Sandrea Falconer, says a 304 bed dormitory is to be built at the facility.
She notes that two of Jamaica’s correctional centres are centuries old and now pose safety risks for staff and inmates.
Senator Falconer says with overcrowding at these facilities the national security ministry had taken a decision to increase the accommodation for inmates at some of the country’s medium security prisons.
She says the project is to commence shortly and will run for nine months.
