INDECOM to interview cops in Westmoreland motorcyclist’s death
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says interviews are to be conducted shortly with all police personnel who were on duty at the time of the controversial death of a motorcyclist in Westmoreland on Thursday.
And INDECOM says they will be served with notices to provide a written account of the incident.
The death of 23-year-old Kevin Powell, of Delveland, in Westmoreland, sparked angry protests by residents who set fire to cane fields in the parish.
The Agriculture Ministry says the fires have resulted in losses of more than 150 million dollars.
The police report that shortly after 10 o’clock Thursday night a team of lawmen were conducting a Vehicular Check Point when Powell was signaled to stop.
According to the police, Powell did not comply, lost control of the motorcycle and collided into a utility pole.
He was taken to hospital where he was being treated, but succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Residents in the community have, however, disputed those claims and allege that he was being chased by police personnel before the crash.
INDECOM says a team of investigators and forensic examiners have already processed the scene.
The oversight body is appealing to anyone with information about the incident to call its Western Regional Office at 940-2310 or its mobile number at 878-0167.
