The World Health Organisation (WHO) today announced that the number of Ebola cases has now surpassed 10,000.

The WHO says the 10,141 cases reported in the latest Ebola outbreak has resulted in 4,922 deaths.

However, in its latest report, the agency says only 27 of those cases occurred outside the three worst hit countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

The WHO says those three countries account for all but 10 of the fatalities.

According to the report, Liberia remains the worst affected country, with 2,705 deaths; followed by Sierra Leone with 1,281 fatalities and Guinea with 926 deaths.

The WHO has, however, warned that the number of Ebola cases could be much higher than 10,000, pointing out that many families were keeping relatives at home rather than taking them to treatment centres.
