KINGSTON, Jamaica:
A group of cross-dressing men this morning clashed with bystanders in New Kingston in a fracas that also resulted in injuries to two police personnel.
The police were carrying out an operation to apprehend two accused juvenile robbers from the Shoemaker Gully.
During the missile-throwing incident involving the cross-dressers and onlookers, a policewoman and the head of the New Kingston Police, Superintendent Christopher Murdock, were injured.
It is alleged that the two juveniles had stolen about $100,000 as well as a tablet computer from a relative and sought refuge in the gully.
None of the items was recovered.
However, the police say they held a 14-year-old juvenile who has been handed over to the Child Development Agency.
The search is on for the second one.
The police say during the operation to find the juveniles, six cross-dressing men believed to be responsible for a number of robberies in New Kingston were also apprehended.
The police say some of them are expected to face identification parades and could be charged soon with simple larceny.
According to Superintendent Murdock, the police are still on the hunt for other men.
He also says the police will return to the area soon, with equipment to dismantle sturdily-built structures that have been created on the bank of the gully by the men.
