World Junior Championships: Jaheel Hyde wins gold, runs world junior leading time
Jamaica's Jaheel Hyde produced a smashing performance to take gold in the men's 400m hurdles at the 15th World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon today.
Hyde ran a world junior leading time of 49.29 seconds ahead of silver medalist Bahrain's Ali Khamis Khamis 49.59(NJR) and bronze medallist USA's Tim Holmes 50.07.
After the event a delighted Hyde noted that he was competing to win.
"This was my aim to come here to win, I am happy for the victory," Hyde said.
Hyde broke the national junior record in the men's 400m hurdles at the 2014 Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships in March of this year, after winning in 49.49 seconds, positioning himself as the second Jamaican junior athlete to break the 50-second barrier in the event.
Meanwhile, in the men’s 200m Michael O'Hara ran 20.31 seconds to take bronze, USA's Trentavis Friday 20.04 took gold and Nigeria’s Ejowvokoghene Divine Oduduru took the silver in 20.25.
And despite producing a new personal best in the men's high jump final after clearing 2.24 metres on his third attempt Christoff Bryan placed fourth.
Jamaica's Clayton Brown also produced a personal best in the men's high jump final after clearing 2.17 metres.
Russia’s Mikhail Akimenko cleared 2.24 metres to take the gold in the event.
Meanwhile, in the women's 400m hurdles semi-final, Jamaica’s Genekee Leith produced a 58.05(PB) to secure a spot in tomorrows final.
